One copy shop I know routinely scraps copiers, but in the past, it has been a "we don't have much else to do right now so we are scrapping it out" mentality. I know they have given away quite a few copiers...IBM Docutech style machines...to other scrappers. This tells me that there isn't big money in copier scrapping because they gave it away, but there is some money in it because others have happily taken them.

There should be plenty of insulated copper wire in the harnesses, and some scrap aluminum. If this machine has a monitor, the monitor could have some copper inside...but I've never scrapped a monitor. There should be some circuit boards too, but those might be better off sold on, if you want to try it. If you have a yard that buys steel, that is a plus...even though these are like dryers...lots of bulk and not a ton of steel.

Printers and fax machines can usually be recycled at yards that accept e-waste. Although your best bet is to take them apart and take the metal and circuit boards out because they are mostly plastic, you can scrap them as full pieces and still earn a few dollars with the Printers/Fax Machines Scrap Prices. If you have Printers/Fax Machines for scrap, ask your local scrap yard if they accept them.

Some scrap yards may pay you scrap price for them, but don’t be surprised if they offer to just recycle it for you. There is so much plastic in the units that it isn’t worth the money for them to pay you for it. To take a printer apart you will need the following;

• A Screwdriver, or two.
• Needle-nose pliers.
• Side-Cutters.
• A Cardboard Box, or similar, for the big bits.
• The lid from an Aerosol can, or similar, for the small bits.
• A bin, for the unwanted bits.
• A bit of rag to clean off the toner.

There are two things you should know about the Laser Printer; One, it prints, so it has toner inside which can get everywhere, and two, it has a laser in it, which can render your eyes useless.

Don't disassemble the printer while it is connected to a power supply, or a Doctor might ask to start harvesting parts from you.

This is where some scrap cloth is important. Place down a sheet of cloth and dismantled the carousel on it. Any loose toner should remain on the cloth which can be thrown away when finished with.

The final tally is both numerous and varied. The big question now is; What should I do with them all?
